About

Ketumala — Sovereign of the Western Varsha

Ketumala · son of Agnidhara · lord of Ketumaalavarsha

Ketumala is the ninth and youngest of the sons born to Agnidhara and the apsara Purvachitti. Agnidhara was a son of Priyavrata and a grandson of Svayambhuva Manu. Purvachitti was a celestial dancer of Brahma's court who took birth as Agnidhara's wife, bore his nine sons, and returned to the celestial realms when her sons had grown. Agnidhara then divided Jambudvipa among the nine sons, assigning to Ketumala the western region of the continent, known as Ketumaalavarsha. This varsha is one of the nine divisions of Jambudvipa and lies directly to the west of Ilavritavarsha, the central region containing Mount Meru. Ketumala and his varsha are recorded in the Bhagavata Purana and the Vishnu Purana. The primary sources do not record individual narrative episodes or descendants for Ketumala beyond his territorial inheritance.

✦ The Name

Ketumala is composed of ketu and mala. Ketu in Sanskrit carries a range of meanings including banner, sign, bright appearance, or comet-like radiance; it also names the descending lunar node in Vedic astrology, though that astronomical usage is a separate sense. Mala in this compound means garland or wreath. The compound thus conveys something like garland of radiant signs or wreath of bright banners, a name suggestive of splendour and distinction. The varsha that takes his name, Ketumaalavarsha, is described as a region of western splendour corresponding to the direction associated in Puranic symbolism with the setting of the sun and the realm of Varuna.

✦ Lineage

  • Father: Agnidhara, king of Jambudvipa and son of Priyavrata.
  • Mother: Purvachitti, an apsara of the celestial realms, wife of Agnidhara.
  • Brothers: Nabhi, Kimpurusha, Harivarsha, Ilavrita, Ramya, Hiranvat, Kuru, and Bhadrasva — the eight elder co-inheritors of Jambudvipa's remaining eight divisions.

✦ The Varsha of Ketumala

Ketumaalavarsha is the western division of Jambudvipa, bounded to the east by Ilavritavarsha and to the west by the Gandhamadana mountain range according to the cosmographic descriptions in the Bhagavata Purana. Together with Bhadrasvavarsha to the east, it forms one of the two lateral varshas flanking the central Ilavritavarsha in the cardinal east-west axis. As with all the non-Bharata varshas in the Puranic scheme, Ketumaalavarsha is presented as a region of great natural richness, where the inhabitants live in harmony and abundance without the sorrows that characterise Bharatavarsha. The western orientation of the varsha connects it in the broader Puranic symbolic geography with the domain of the setting sun and the deity Varuna, lord of the western direction.

✦ Connection to the Wider Genealogy

Ketumala is the great-grandson of Svayambhuva Manu, descending through Priyavrata and Agnidhara. As the youngest of Agnidhara's nine sons, he stands at the collateral edge of a lineage whose most celebrated branch runs through his eldest brother Nabhi, then Rishabha, then Bharata, whose name was given to the subcontinent Bharatavarsha. No descendants of Ketumala are named in the principal Puranic sources.
